I make documentary work with dignity and clarity. My priority is informed, ongoing consent, accurate context, and safe, non-exploitative storytelling. This page explains how I work and what you can expect when we collaborate.
1) Consent: tiered and ongoing
Choices for every participant:
•Full name + face (explicit opt-in)
•First name + face (default adult option)
•Anonymous (silhouette / hands / over-shoulder / back-view)
•No image (not photographed at all)
How consent is gathered:
•Verbal, in plain language; I explain purpose, platforms (portfolio, NGO/media, socials), and the no-location rule if relevant.
•Back-of-camera review: we keep only frames people are comfortable with.
•Ongoing: I re-check if context changes (e.g., portrait becomes lead image).
Withdrawal:
•Participants can change their mind any time before publication. I keep a named contact so requests are easy and respected promptly.
2) Representation & captions
I avoid stereotypes and romanticised framings. Images must add truthful context (work, process, environment), not just aesthetics.
Captions are factual and verb-led (what is happening, with what, and why).
I provide alt text for accessibility (one clear sentence per image, no “image of…”).
3) Children & vulnerable people
No identifiable images of children without explicit guardian consent and a clear editorial purpose.
For vulnerable contexts, I defer to the safest anonymous option and seek partner guidance on risk.
I avoid photographing private or sensitive conversations.
4) Location & privacy
Where safety or privacy is a concern, I do not publish exact locations, maps, or identifiable signage/metadata.
GPS/EXIF location data is removed from all delivered files.
5) Data security & storage
Originals and edits are stored on encrypted, password-protected SSDs; cloud access is restricted.
Consent notes (non-sensitive, minimal) are kept separately from images.
If a partner requires formal releases, we use their templates or a mutually agreed form.
6) Editorial independence
I do not stage events to fit a preconceived narrative. If a scene is directed or re-enacted, it will be stated.
Corrections: If I learn something is inaccurate or harmful, I will correct captions or remove images.
7) Usage & credits
Standard credit: ©MattHolloPhoto. Where appropriate: “with consent of participants; location undisclosed.”
Partners/NGOs receive agreed-format files (e.g., 3500px + 2000px, 4:5 crops, captions/alt text).
Rights and embargoes are confirmed in writing before publication.
8) Accessibility
Every published image includes alt text.
Videos/reels include burned-in text or captions for key information.
9) Contact for concerns or removals
If you appear in my work and want to review, correct, or remove an image before publication, or if you have any safeguarding concerns, please email: matthew.holloway1516@gmail.com (subject: Ethics). I’ll reply within 5 working days.
